Traveling & Compression

Although there are compression garment shops who claim that they can fit you for a garment, be sure that the fitter has the specialized training necessary to fit you properly in the appropriate garment. Ill fitting garments can cause major setbacks in your progress towards maintaining the condition.

In the last few years, there has been increasing interest in whether gradient compression stockings reduce the risk of DVT (deep vein thrombosis-blood clots in the legs) and other circulatory problems in airline passengers. The stockings are worn throughout the flight. By applying a gentle pressure to ankle compression stockings help blood to flow. Pressure combined with leg movement helps blood in superficial veins to move to the deep veins and back to the heart. The blood is then less likely to clot in the deep veins, which could be fatal if the clot moves to the lungs.

Wearing compression stockings will also reduce the discomfort and swelling in legs and ankles. The risk of DVT applies to other types of long distance travel such as car, train or bus. When remaining seated without moving for over 5 hours, the risk of DVT could be four times higher.

Travelers Tips:

Wear comfortable clothing
Move your feet and ankles every 15 minutes: 10 flex’s and 10 circles
Take a short walk every 2 hours
Raise your feet
Wear compression stockings while on the trip will help prevent symptoms and swelling
Drink plenty of liquids, avoid dehydration
